Comparisons with adjectives

The dog is fast.
 
The deer is faster.

Making Comparisons with Adjectives

The man is young. The boy is younger. The boy is younger than the man.

The turtle is slow. The snail is slower. The snail is slower than the turtle.

  • The hamsters are cute. The bunnies are cuter. The bunnies are cuter than the hamsters.  [Be careful of 'be' verbs; 'is' vs 'are'.]
  • This comedy is funny. That comedy is funnier. This comedy is funnier than that comedy.
  • My clothes are expensive. Her clothes are more expensive. Her clothes are more expensive than my clothes.  [Be careful of 'be' verbs; 'is' vs 'are'.]

Rules for making comparisons with adjectives:

1. Add “er”  sweet:   Bananas are sweet, but peaches are sweeter.
small, tall, narrow, dry, slow, fast, high, low, warm, cool, cold, loud
* hot: hotter, fat : fatter, wet : wetter, big : bigger, sad : sadder, thin : thinner
* strange : stranger; loose : looser; wide : wider; safe : safer; wise : wiser

2.  Change "y" to “ier”   pretty:   This picture is prettier.
happy, heavy, hungry, early, easy, cloudy, busy, funny, lonely, healthy, ugly

3.  Add “more”   expensive:   Your sweater is more expensive than mine.
delicious, energetic, dangerous, normal, interesting, boring, special, right, wrong, terrible, foolish, square, stupid

far < farther
fun < more fun
